Barista FIRE Calculator guide

Formula, example, FAQs, and notes

Formula explanation in simple language

Barista FIRE target = annual expenses not covered by part-time income divided by the safe withdrawal rate. The calculator then projects your current portfolio and contributions toward that target.

  1. Uncovered annual expenses = annual expenses - part-time income.
  2. Portfolio target = uncovered annual expenses ÷ safe withdrawal rate.
  3. Portfolio projection compounds current savings and annual contributions.
  4. Time to target is estimated by simulating annual growth and contributions.
  5. Healthcare, taxes, sequence risk, and inflation should be reviewed separately.

Example calculation

Example: annual expenses $50,000, part-time income $20,000, and 4% withdrawal rate. Target portfolio = ($50,000 - $20,000) ÷ 0.04 = $750,000.

After changing any input, recalculate and compare the new result with the original assumptions.

Common mistakes and interpretation notes

  • Do not leave default values unchanged if they do not match your real situation.
  • When changing currency, confirm that money fields converted to the correct selected currency before comparing results.
  • Check units carefully before calculating. Mixing inches, feet, pounds, kilograms, days, months, or years can change the result.
  • Treat the result as an estimate, not a guarantee, quote, diagnosis, settlement promise, or final professional decision.
  • Do not ignore tax treatment, fees, compounding assumptions, policy limits, inflation, or rate changes.
